Deadline for Taxpayers Living Abroad

Taxpayers living abroad who automatically qualified for the two-month extension must file their 2013 federal income tax returns by Monday, June 16, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The normal file date is June 15, however it falls on a Sunday this year.

The automatic June 16 extension deadline applies to any U.S. citizen or resident alien living overseas, or those who serving in the military outside of the U.S. To use the two-month extension, taxpayers must attach a statement to their tax return explaining which of these two situations applies:

  1. You are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living outside of the Unites States and Puerto Rico and your main place of business or post of duty is outside of the United States and Puerto Rico; or
  2. You are a U.S. citizen or resident alien in military or naval services on duty outside of the United States and Puerto Rico.

Taxpayers who can’t meet the June 16 deadline can request an extension to file with form 4868 which extends the deadline until October 15, 2014.
